The Codex

Everything you can field, carry, wear or open with — read off the game's own data, not a marketing summary of it. What isn't listed here you'll have to earn on the board.

How a match is won

The part that confuses everybody the first time, written out in full.

Two ways, and the board tells you which. Some Saturdays ask for checkmate, exactly as in chess. The rest are won on points: you are given a target, and reaching it ends the match immediately, whatever the position looks like. A checkmate still wins a points match, so you are never forced to play for the target. Boss Saturdays — every fourth one — are always checkmate.

Two things score, only on your own move. Taking a piece is worth exactly its weight — a pawn 1, a rook 5, a queen 9, the same number the game shows you everywhere else. Putting a rival in check is worth 1. Nothing else scores.

The target is a share of what your opponent brought. Not a fixed number: about half of it on the early Saturdays, rising to most of it by the last. A heavier opponent asks for more, because there is more on the board to take.

Which is why a match can end mid-board. The target is checked the moment your move lands, so the Saturday is over on the capture that crosses it — both armies still standing, nothing else having happened.

Openings

How you walk in. Every run starts with one of these.
